⭐ Most Commonly Asked Questions

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on technique, control, and leverage, allowing people of all sizes to train effectively. It emphasises ground control, submissions, and problem-solving.

Is BJJ suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. Most people start with no experience at all. Classes are structured to teach fundamentals step by step in a friendly, supportive environment.

Do I need to be fit before starting BJJ?

No. You get fit by training, not beforehand. You can train at your own pace and build fitness naturally over time.

Am I too old to start BJJ?

Not at all. Adults start BJJ at all ages. Training intensity can be adapted to suit your goals—whether fitness, self-defence, or competition.

Is BJJ safe?

BJJ is one of the safest combat sports because it focuses on control rather than strikes. Submissions are stopped by tapping, and safety is always prioritised.

How long does it take to earn a black belt?

Typically 8–12 years. BJJ belts are earned through consistent training, skill development, and mat time—not quick tests.

What should I wear to my first class?

  • Comfortable sportswear (t-shirt and shorts or leggings)
  • No zips, buttons, or pockets
If training in the gi, we’ll guide you or help you get started.

❌ Common Misconceptions (Cleared Up)

“BJJ is just rolling around on the floor.”

BJJ is highly technical and strategic. Every movement has purpose, and problem-solving is a major part of training.

“You need to be strong to be good at BJJ.”

Technique beats strength. Smaller practitioners regularly control larger opponents using leverage and timing.

“BJJ is only for fighters.”

Most people train BJJ for:

  • Fitness
  • Confidence
  • Self-defence
  • Stress relief
  • Community
    Competition is optional.

“I’ll get injured.”

Injuries are rare in well-run gyms. We emphasise control, tapping early, and mutual respect—ego has no place on the mats.

“BJJ is only for men.”

Not True. BJJ is for everyone. Women train worldwide and often excel due to the technical nature of the art.
